The school district in Texas is considering a proposal to allow teachers to refuse to take sick days for students with mental illness, according to local news station KVUE.
The district is considering the measure in response to a number of recent incidents in which students have been refused sick days due to mental health concerns.
In March, a student at Highland Elementary School in New Orleans was refused a sick day after the school’s principal reportedly said the student’s behavior “makes me want to throw up.”
The student reportedly took a medication to treat the mental illness.
On Friday, an elementary school student in Dallas was asked to take a sick leave after her father told her he did not want to let her go to a church service.
“I know you’re not going to be able to go to church with your family,” his father told the girl’s mother.
“You’re not coming with your friends.
You can’t be here,” the teacher allegedly told the mother.
